What is done during a functional capacity evaluation?

The functional capacity evaluation uses a variety of tests and observations to evaluate and diagnose your physical ability to function in different tasks. Once the final report has been created, it will demonstrate which activities you can safely perform.

There is also an interview that is completed that will take an average of 10 minutes to an hour. This will entirely depend on how complex your situation is. You will be asked a series of questions about your injury and what you do for work. In most cases, you will be asked to fill out paperwork in relation to your medical history, and why you are visiting the clinic today. It would be similar in a sense to the paperwork you could receive from your primary care doctor upon a first visit.

There are a few tests that may be completed during your functional capacity evaluation appointment, including:

• Material handling (this will include pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying)
• Positional tolerance (this will include kneeling, walking, squatting, reaching, sitting, bending, standing, balance, crawling, etc.)
• Objective measurements for the injured areas of the body (this will include muscle strength, range of motion, circumferential measurements for any swelling, etc.)

While functional capacity evaluations are standardized, the content of each test will be tailored to your injuries and the job demands you face.

How long does a functional capacity evaluation take?

The functional capacity evaluation can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. However, the evaluation can also be completed over two consecutive days. The length of the functional capacity evaluation will depend on your job as well as the injury you sustained. The tests that are involved with the functional capacity evaluation should not cause you pain or injure you. If you do feel pain, please report this to the evaluator immediately.

You have the ability to stop the tests during your evaluation at any time for any reason. We value your opinion; your safety is one of our top priorities at REPAIR SI, Physical Therapy. While we will observe you closely during these tests, if you feel at any time during your functional capacity evaluation that you are at risk of harm, let us know. Once you have completed the tests we have recommended, you are able to go home.

What can I expect at a functional capacity evaluation?

Functional capacity evaluations are physical assessment that needs to be completed based on your claim to gauge your physical ability and report it back to the original source that requested it. Functional capacity evaluations will include a variety of tests, observations, and practices where you will be evaluated on different aspects of your physical function. The final report will demonstrate the collective impact of your symptoms from your injury based on your ability to perform specific essential work duties.

A functional capacity evaluation may be recommended based on the symptoms that you are suffering from and other physical conditions including:

• Muscle weakness
• Issues position
• Balance problems
• Numbness
• Tingling
• Pain
• Abnormal or limited movements
• Exhausted with physical activities
• Poor dexterity and/or gross movements

Whether your disability is due to an illness or injury is irrelevant. We want to know if your physical abilities have impaired you, and the functional capacity evaluation will provide the evidence necessary to show your restrictions and limitations.

What happens after a functional capacity exam?

After the functional capacity exam has commenced, you are able to go home, either by driving yourself or having an arranged pick-up come to take you home. Our evaluators will review the information documented and prepare a detailed report that will be sent to the referral source for the exam. This may be your primary care physician or your insurance company. For more information, please call us or request an appointment online. We are conveniently located at
