Blood flow restriction training is a fantastic rehabilitation technique that allows you to reap the benefits of intense heavy weight-lifting training sessions while only needing to perform low-to moderate-intensity training. Blood flow restriction training reduces stress on the tissues which may be healing from surgery or a recent injury. During your blood flow restriction training, you will perform high repetitions of a certain exercise whilst wearing a band or cuff around the upper arm or upper leg which will use light resistance. The following physical changes will occur with the blood flow restriction training:
● Improved muscular strength
● The increased muscular cross-sectional area
● It prevents muscular atrophy.
● Development of healthier and newer blood vessels
● Decreased risk of cardiovascular disease
● Improved bone mineral density
Blood flow restriction training is often used for athletes or heavy weight-lifters by using an elastic or other approved blood flow restriction training band to partially restrict the venous blood return. For short periods of time, this will partially restrict the oxygenated blood flowing from the limbs back to the heart. This will make the muscles work harder to pump the blood back to the heart than if you were to do the training without the blood flow restriction training band.
However, it should be noted that blood flow restriction training involves workouts that focus on exercise and rest periods. During periods of exercise, blood will be rapidly circulated from the heart to the arteries, to the limbs, to the veins, and then back to the heart. The blood flow restriction training band will force the blood to work harder, lowering the oxygen levels within the muscle cells, which will cause the muscles to become fatigued faster, just like they would if the heavy lifting of weights was involved.
During the periods of rest, when the muscles will have their time of recovery, the blood flow restriction training bands will be left on in their inflated state to enhance the systemic benefits of blood flow restriction training.
Blood flow restriction training proves to showcase many benefits to those that use it appropriately, including:
● Increases muscle mass
● Increases muscle strength
● Increases cardiovascular capacity
● Increases testosterone
● Decreases tissue stress and joint stress
● Shows little to no muscle damage
● Many do not need recovery after a workout
● Little to no delayed onset muscular soreness
● Low intensity is all that is needed
While blood flow restriction training has been used more recently for athletes, individuals in rehabilitation are also seeing many benefits of this technique. You may be a good candidate for blood flow restriction training if you include:
● Pre-op ortho patients
● Post-op ortho patients
● Geriatric patients
● Bedrest and/or immobilized patients
● Active recovery
Blood flow restriction training has shown major benefits and improvements from studies on athletes that showed this particular training induced significant improvements in their strength, sprint performance, and leg power. It also showcased that blood flow restriction training is beneficial for well-trained athletes, by increasing their strength in a short amount of time (shown in just 4 weeks). It has also shown the effectiveness of simple occlusion tools like knee straps, which make blood flow restriction a viable option for real-world applications as well.
Thanks to these studies, we are able to see the evidence for what it is. Blood flow restriction training is a valuable tool for enhancing performance in athletes. While choosing proper training protocols, the occlusion pressures that are applied will increase many aspects of their workout and overall performance.
